At the 1999 reunion it was proposed that we attempt to locate, duplicate, and archive all the crew photos from the 461st Bomb Group.  The project is rolling along nicely now, but there are a lot of photos without identifying captions, so if you can supply information please E-mail me.  Read more about this effort. We are working on a way to include the ground personnel in a similar project, so please sound off on your ideas for that.

The archive now swells with pictures of over 135 crews.  Still, we are less than half-way to our goal of archiving the photos of the 300+ crews that served with the 461st Bomb Group during WWII.  92 of the photos were already in the Archive, and many have been contributed since the request went into the December 1999 Liberaider.

If we do not yet have your crew picture posted in this section we hope it will further encourage you to send one in.  We also encourage you to write a crew history to accompany your picture.  We have restructured the crew index to make it easier to follow, and to allow you to see both what we have and what we are missing.

Include a Self Addressed Stamped Photo Mailer if you wish to have your photo returned.  We would, naturally, like to have a hardcopy on file for the archive, but we will cheerfully return any photo you would like to have back.

When submitting crew photos to the archive, please try to include the following information:

Any Crew Numbers You Remember Being Used: In some cases there may be more than one.

Specific Crew Positions: Because MOS numbers do not indicate gunner positions, please be as specific as noting even RIGHT and LEFT Waist when possible.

Nicknames: In most cases, we can pull full names and spelling from the database, so let us know what nicknames were earned within your crew.

Crew Training Information: Please supply us with your Training Crew Number and the Stateside base at which your crew was assembled.

Crew History Or Anecdotes: Give us the story of your crew and how you worked together in the air and on the ground.

Individual Aircraft With Which Your Crew Was Associated: After the loss of the original batch of H-Models, aircraft were not as closely associated with particular crews. However, if your crew became quite familiar with an individual ship let's get that into the record.

Many of the crew photos posted do not yet have their captions added. Being a 4 finger typist (working on 5!), I wouldn't object one bit to having you drop a caption into an E-Mail so I could just copy and paste the text into place. Remember to put a crew position with each name if possible, and if you can be specific about the side each waist gunner manned, it will aid us greatly.

The notation 'ZI' in the crew number slot indicates that a crew was assigned only for processing to the US at the end of the war.
