(E) 461st Bomb Group 766th Crew 54 Aircraft B-24 “H” Liberator Serial # 42-52405 Olive Drab The aircraft was shot down (apparently by flak) on 24 May 1944 over the target of Wiener Neustadt, Germany (Austria), and the aircraft’s crash occurred near Sigless. Weather was cloudy and the group made a first pass with no bombs dropped due to visibility. The bombing group decided to make a 2nd pass thru the flak field. Including Robert G. Lane, 4 were killed on this flight. The other 6 moved back to the states after the war - four of whom have recently passed away while 2 appear to be living as of 18 June 2002. |
